This enables the sensors to detect an object that is only a short distance directly in front of another object or background, this distance can be as low as a few mm. Retro-reflective models have a special lens which polarises the emitted light and filters out unwanted reflections, making these sensors useable in applications otherwise unsuited to retro-reflective sensing.
