Efficient resource management is a central challenge in the waste and recycling industry, as global waste volumes continue to grow while infrastructure struggles to keep pace. Digital innovations such as AI, IoT, and sensor technologies are increasingly seen as key enablers for smarter, more sustainable operations. At this year’s Energy, Fuel & Decarbonisation Expo in Birmingham, Blickfeld will showcase its contribution to this shift: QbVolume, an innovative 3D LiDAR for real-time waste material monitoring. Visitors can experience the technology live at booth EN-H104.

Transparency und Efficiency for Waste Management

Unlike manual or camera-based methods, Blickfeld’s QbVolume uses high-resolution 3D LiDAR data to measure fill levels in waste bunkers, open yards, or containers – reliably and contact-free, even with irregular or loosely compacted materials. It provides real-time data via an intuitive dashboard both on-site and remotely, and operates autonomously with minimal infrastructure. The scalable system can cover single bunkers as well as large, complex municipal facilities, making it suitable for operations of any size.

How it works

Blickfeld’s solution features a compact, eye-safe LiDAR sensor mounted above the monitored area – on a pole, wall, or existing structure. The sensor scans the surface of waste piles below, generating a real-time 3D map. By comparing these scans to previous measurements or a known baseline, the system calculates precise volume changes, giving waste and recycling companies accurate insights into storage levels, material inflow and outflow, and overall site utilization. All data can be displayed on the intuitive Blickfeld dashboard, showing current volumes, historical trends, and automated alerts when defined thresholds are reached. For larger sites, multiple sensors can be networked into a single interface, providing comprehensive monitoring and helping companies streamline operations, reduce unnecessary handling, and optimize logistics.
